Levan Akin | 106 min | Georgia | 2024 | Drama | 15
A quiet and resiliant story about two Georgian strangers setting out on an adventure crossing the Black Sea to reconnect with an estranged family member. Crossing is a poignant exploration of complex family bonds, and at its heart an immersive quest for connection and catharsis.
The film follows Lia, a retired teacher from Georgia, who learns from her young neighbour, Achi, that her long-lost transgender niece, Tekla, has crossed the border into Turkey. In search of Tekla, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search. Humanistic and compassionate, Akin’s third feature is a heartfelt portrayal of overcoming the degrees of separation that divide us.
Crossing is the fourth feature from Levan Akin, who had his breakthrough with the critically acclaimed And Then We Danced. Once again exploring queer narratives of injustice in his home country Georgia. The film premiered at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival where it won the prestigous Teddy Award, the top prize for LGBT cinema. Perfect for those who enjoyed films like In The Name Of… or Moonlight
