A customs officer with a supernatural ability to sniff out guilt meets a mysterious stranger who challenges everything she thought she knew about herself. Border is a dark, genre-defying allegory that blends Nordic noir with body horror and folklore, delivering a strange yet endearing story of love and otherness.
Tina, played by Eva Melander, has been ostracized for her appearance and gifted with a sense that lets her detect human emotions. Her world shifts when she meets Vore, a man who shares her physical traits and seems to understand her in ways no one else does. As their bond deepens, Tina is drawn into a shadowy realm of myth and identity, forcing her to confront truths about herself.
Directed by Iranian-born, Denmark-based filmmaker Ali Abbasi, Border is adapted from a short story by Let the Right One In author John Ajvide Lindqvist. In his second feature film, Abbasi develops his distinctive cinematic style, blending gritty realism with folklore and body horror to create something oddly unique. The film premiered at Cannes in 2018, where it won the Un Certain Regard award, and later received an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Strange, gripping, and impossible to categorise, it’s a must-see for anyone drawn to the dark, existential, fairy-tale worlds of Pan’s Labyrinth, The Lighthouse, or Donnie Darko.
